The Point Henry Site is a former aluminium production facility, consisting of a smelter, ingot mill and semi-fabricating plant. All three areas of the site ceased operations in December 2014.
Investigations beneath the Rolling Mill area identified soil impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) and minor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Phenols. As part of the remediation works, Ausdecom excavated the impacted soils from beneath the former Rolling Mill and transported the contaminated soils to a purpose constructed Soil Treatment Area for the purposes of bioremediation.
This Scope of Work included screening, soil preparation and bioremediation treatment processes. All soils were bioremediated to a level achieving the site-specific clean-up criteria derived for Commercial / Industrial & Medium Density Residential land uses on the Pt Henry site.
In continuous consultation with the client and the site appointed environmental consultants, Ausdecom honored the overall project requirements and successfully completed the scoped works.
Some key achievements of the project included the successful treatment and remediation of ~50,000T of material to the required site re-use criteria, including the re-use of treated materials within the site as backfill.
By implementing a robust soil treatment methodology, Ausdecom successfully diverted >50,000T of materials from landfill ,which in-turn had major cost savings for the project and assisted in achieving the overall recycling and re-use target for the project.
