Outline In 2022 Ausdecom were contracted by AECOM to conduct the demolition and remediation of a former service station in Wangaratta, VIC.
Outcome Throughout the project, Ausdecom had meticulously planned strategies, and timelines in order to meet our client’s requirements.

Scope of Work Completed

The project involved the demolition of the decommissioned service station, removal and offsite disposal of 5 underground storage tanks, and the onsite remediation of approximately 1750 m3 of soil contaminated with hydrocarbons.
Due to the complexity of the site’s location within the Wangaratta city centre, Ausdecom utilized a purpose designed and built Soil Vapour Extraction system, to mitigate odours and vapours crossing the site boundary throughout the remediation Scope of Works.

Throughout the project, Ausdecom had meticulously planned strategies, and timelines in order to meet our client’s requirements along with our team of experienced remediation personnel. Constant onsite supervision and management ensured that the project progressed smoothly, exceeding expectations, and honouring our client’s deadlines.

Challenges encountered:

Working in close proximity to the Wangaratta community and stakeholders
Mitigating offsite contamination
Reducing soil contamination to within acceptable limits for the sites future reuse.
Minimizing disruption to surrounding traffic flow
Working during extremely wet conditions and ensuring the low-lying aquifers were not penetrated.
Simultaneous operations taking place within site.

Works Included:

  • Removal of friable and non-friable asbestos from the service station building interior.
  • Demolition of service station building and canopy.
  • Exposure and removal of 5 underground storage tanks (5,000L – 50,000L).
  • Treatment of approximately 1750 m3 of soil contaminated with hydrocarbons via a purpose designed and built Soil Vapour Extraction system.
  • All soils were remediated to the required zoning criteria, and were successfully reused onsite.
